¹After this I saw another angel with great authority coming down from heaven, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. ²He called out in a mighty voice:

It has fallen,
Babylon the Great has fallen!
She has become a home for demons,
a haunt for every unclean spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
and a haunt for every unclean and despicable beast. ³For all the nations have drunk
the wine of her sexual immorality,
which brings wrath.
The kings of the earth
have committed sexual immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth
have grown wealthy from her sensuality and excess.
⁴Then I heard another voice from heaven:

Come out of her, my people,
so that you will not share in her sins
or receive any of her plagues.
⁵For her sins are piled up[e] to heaven,
and God has remembered her crimes.
⁶Pay her back the way she also paid,
and double it according to her works.
In the cup in which she mixed,
mix a double portion for her.
⁷As much as she glorified herself and indulged her sensual and excessive ways,
give her that much torment and grief.
For she says in her heart,
“I sit as a queen;
I am not a widow,
and I will never see grief.”
⁸For this reason her plagues will come in just one day—
death and grief and famine.
She will be burned up with fire,
because the Lord God who judges her is mighty. Revelation 18:1-8 CSB

Episode on defining "Church"

• I think of the Church as the body of Christ
• This doesn't have borders, but generally we look for people within a certain distance
• I still consider people I am able to call and pray with or talk to about spiritual matters part of my Church family

Personally I prefer smaller Churches where you can get to know people and develop ginuine relationships
Christianity is about doing life together!

If majority of the Church is in apostasy, it's time to leave
Matthew 10:14 says to move on if people don't want to hear the truth
Now is the time to leave behind the god of the world and start following the God of the Bible; it's time to focus on truth and turn away from man made traditions.

Christianity vs. Greek Life (Pt. 2)

I actually learned a lot about what Christianity should look like from my experiences in a sorority. One of those things was about image and acceptance. In this episode, we're going to contrast views about image and acceptance between Greek Life councils and talk about what Christianity could learn from each of these views

There were three Greek councils at my undergraduate university National Panhellenic Council (NPHC), College Panhellenic Council (CPC) and Interfraternity Council (IFC)

• NPHC - consists of the 9 traditionally black fraternities and sororities known as the divine 9
• CPC - consists of traditionally white social sororities
• IFC - consists of traditionally white social fraternities

Because we were all under Greek life, when we came together we were given a chance to learn about each other's cultures

Like with Greek Life, often people on the outside of the Church have a different understanding of what is supposed to happen and what is actually happening than the members.

• Most people outside of Greek life don't know the difference between councils; they associate the faults and accolades of whichever council they are most familiar with to the whole group
• Most people within Greek life dont collaborate with people outside of their council; they know there is a difference but don't bother to learn from each other

Bylaws are to Greek Letter Organizations what the Bible is to Christianity
Non-members don't have access to the Bylaws, and while non-believers do have access to the Bible, it's unlikely they will read it if they aren't interested in Christianity

The intake process is very different between CPC/IFC and NPHC

• NPHC - you need so many credits to join; most people join sophomore year or later (a few join second semester of freshman year)
• CPC/IFC - people can join their first semester
• NPHC - won't accept you if you make it known you are interested in multiple organizations
• CPC/IFC - encourages first, second, third choices
• NPHC - has no problem rejecting people; the expectation is that you will improve and come back
• CPC/IFC - tries to find a place for everyone

Both methods have a place in Christianity

• Christianity is supposed to be inclusive. We should be working to find a place for everyone!
• You may not be a great singer, so even though your first choice ministry is the choir, maybe that's not where you should be
• Determiniation and improvement is important too though
• You don't want people in the body who fundamentally disagree with it's mission
• You don't want people in the body who aren't going to submit the Christ
• Christ can't be your 2nd choice

Another major difference between CPC/IFC and NPHC is how we view image
NPHC organizations are really good at branding. We don't let other people wear our letters because we want to make sure they're always associated with the right image. We only wear our letters in our official colors and we only wear our colors to events.
CPC/IFC will put their letters on an event shirt and let anyone wear it. CPC will put their letters in patterns and prints that have nothing to do with their colors (sometimes it's cute, though!) and they all have clapping chants that sound exactly alike. Even after spending time around them, it was very hard for me to differentiate between the organization based on principles, values, or even image.

The image of Christianity presented to the world is very muddy
We should be more particular about our image—specifically those who are leading and are front and center
Any and everybody should not be representing us to the world[3]
People are misrepresenting our "organization"
The Bible warns about false doctrine and false prophets — we should be calling them out the way Paul does!

The Political Polarization of Christians

A lot of people are claiming to vote for Trump "because they are Christian" even though there's nothing Christian about his actions!

Other Religious Oraganizations On the Image of Their Organization

The Satanic Temple sued a televison show for misrepresentation over the image of their iconography.[1]

3. I understand that there are differences of opinions in what is and isn't of God. I'm not talking about chekcing people over controversial things like whether a woman can wear pants or not or what genre of music a person listens too. Disclaimer: This episode is not an attack on individuals. All statements made are about the organization and beliefs of the Catholic and Protestant Churches. There are people who mean well and are unaware of the errors of their church in many lost/deceived/apostate churches (not limited to the Catholic Church). In the end, God will judge them by their relationship with Him and according to what they knew.

The official start of The Reformation is generally attributed to October 31, 1517, when Luther nailed his 95 Theses.
There were attempts at reformation before Luther, as well.

The invention of the printing press and translating the Bible into the common tongue gave ordinary people access to the Word. The Gutenberg Bible (one of the first books ever printed) was still printed in Latin, but over time the availability of the Bible in the common tongue (e.g., English, German, etc.) became the norm

King Henry splitting from the Catholic church over his desire tho divorce his wife is both an example of the power the papacy had over European kings as well as part of the success of the reformation.[1]
The Vatican has a ton of money.[2]
"The Pope is the ruler of both Vatican City State and the Holy See. The Holy See, as the supreme body of government of the Catholic Church, is a sovereign juridical entity under international law."[5]
The relationship change between the US and Catholicism

• Many protestants fled persecution from the Catholic church during The Reformation and ended up in the US. (There were also a few Catholics who fled persecution from protestants that ended up in the US, as well)
• The Supreme Court shifted drastically to now being ~62% (75% if Trump's nominee is confirmed) Catholic.[7]
• JFK is the only professed Catholic president the US has had.

Revelation 17:9 says the woman (or church[10]) is on 7 mountains(hills); The city of Rome, where the Vatican is located is also known as the 7 Hills or the 7 Hills of Rome.[9]

Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many Mark 13:6 CSB

The picture usually attributed to Jesus was painted approximately in the 1500s—it is not the Messiah.
Many suspect the picture is based on Cesare Borgia.[8]
Whoever it is a picture of, it does not match descriptions of the Biblical Christ; Christ was not European.[8]

Legalism causes judgmentalness and fractures in the Church.

There's a difference is doing something because you love Christ or because the Holy Spirit has convicted you and doing something to be saved.
It's supposed to be about relationship not religion!
It's hard to find the right balance between the extremes of getting too caught up in following God's Word (legalism) and not following it at all.
Fellowship with diverse believers allows us to balance each other out and pull each oter back from the extremes.

Greed, The Prosperity Gospel, & 666

How does greed tie in with 666 and the prosperity gospel? That's what we're talking about in this episode. Bible verses to reference: Matthew 6:24-34; Matthew 19:23-24; 1 Timothy 6:9-10.

¹⁰The one who loves silver is never satisfied with silver, and whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with income. This too is futile. ¹¹ When good things increase, the ones who consume them multiply; what, then, is the profit to the owner, except to gaze at them with his eyes? ¹²The sleep of the worker is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich permits him no sleep. Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 CSB

Testimony of how I got to this topic

• Independent study of the Word is important; give yourself time with God to allow Him to talk to you
• Going beyong the material given to you by the Church you attend will do wonders for your relationship with God
• I was looking for Revelation 17:15 and did a Google search for "Revelation sea people"
• I found this an article on Revelation and the sea[1] which had an interesting couple of paragraphs that inspired this episode

As for the beast himself: I have come to believe that the number of the beast, 666, is a reference to 1 Kings 10:14. In this passage 666 is the amount of gold that Solomon received annually. Any studied Jew would have recognized that Solomon was doing a number of things that God had said not to do (Deuteronomy 17:16-17). Therefore “666” would be a good metaphor for worldly wealth and for the love of same.

So back to Revelation; we find that the beast of greed for worldly wealth comes out of the people of the world. Then there arises a philosophy within God’s people that it is okay to lust after the greed of the world. This would be the second beast who is also a false prophet. He teaches salvation through wealth.

Jesus' death and resurrection dealt a mortal wound to greed -- or at least it should have been. The resurrection proves the relative worthlessness of seeking salvation from wealth. Nevertheless, greed survived and flourished among both the people of the world and among God’s people until God throws greed into the lake of fire. What are the two beasts?

• The beasts are talked about in Revelation 13: one beast comes out of the sea and the other comes out of the land
• The sea represents nations and people (Revelation 17:15) and the land represents God's people (Revelation 12:6)
• The beast of the land is a false prophet and deceives the people of God

The war between good and evil is about worship.

• Greek root of the word "anti" from "anti-Christ" means in place of or in opposition to[2]
• Satan's goal is to be worshipped as a god (Isaiah 14:13); he wants to take Christ's place
• A false worship system is what Satan has set up to distract people from the Most High God

666 & Solomon?

• Solomon received 666 pieces of gold (1 Kings 10:14)
• Solomon stored up tons of wealth and had many wives (Deuteronomy 17:16-17)
• Interestingly the story preceeding Solomon receiving this amount of gold is that of the visit from the Queen of Sheba when Solomon flaunts his wealth and wisdom.

⁹But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 CSB

The prosperity gospel[3]

• Most of the voices dominating "Christianity" are prosperity gospel pastors (e.g., Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar)
• A little lie in the midst of truth is what the devil uses to get people (Galatians 5:9)
• People quickly become obssessed with "sowing a seed" and "manifesting"; the message is that you should worship God for your own personal gain/benefit here in this life
• Greed has people losing sight of God's message
  1. Example 1: a fellow believer refused to rent because they think its giving away money and a waste of money, but their end goal is to buy a duplex and have someone rent it out to pay their mortgage. That's like selling crack even though you wouldn't take it or let your friends/family take it.
  2. Example 2: In high school my friends and I started competing to see who could make $300 on a paycheck; I worked 50 hours a week, worked 6 days a week, and skipped lunch (even though that was illegal). I was completely wiped out when I got home and on my day off. I didn't even get to enjoy the money I made.
• Warning signs that greed is overshadowing the Kingdom
  1. Not spending time with your family
  2. Not studied the Word, attending Bible study, etc.
  3. Not fellowshipping with your fellow believers
  4. Not spending time doing God's work (e.g., community service)
  5. Not recognizing the blessings you have (many of us are living better than most people in the world)
  6. Forgetting that this Earth is temporary

²³Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:23-24 CSB

The mark of the beast is about mentality: what you think (forehead) and what you do (hand)

The Biblical end of the world and climate change are basically the same thing—mankind's greed (sin) is the root of our planet going haywire

• Earthquakes (Revelation 6:12—among others)
• Pestilence (Matthew 24:7)
• Famine (Revelation 18:8)

The Word says that there will be "birth pangs" (John 16:21; 1 Thessalonians 5:3) before the end and 2020 has definitely been giving us a taste these signs:

• Wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7)
  • Azerbaijan vs. Armenia[4]
  • US vs. Iran[5]
  • China vs. Hong Kong[6]
  • China vs. India[7]
  • China vs. Taiwan[8]
• Earthquakes[9]
• Hurricanes [10]
• Murder Hornets[11]
• West coast fires[12]
• Locusts[14]
• COVID-19

Financial literacy is important but be careful not to let money matters become an idol in your life.
There will be a time when you have to choose between material wealth and God—you cannot serve both God and money.

No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24 CSB

Now it the time to be focused on the Kingdom, not the world
Invest in your relationship with God
Invest in your relationship with your fellow man (family/friends)
Invest in your community

²⁵“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? ²⁶Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? ²⁷Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? ²⁸And why do you worry about clothes? Christianity & Government

I'm sick of people saying they are Republican because they're Christian. So I decided to do a little study on what the Bible says about government and leaders. This episode is just the tip of the iceberg, but it's a start.

But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king. 1 Samuel 8:7 CSB

Nations

I noticed that nations and governments aren't really meantioned until after the flood and the Tower of Babel; before the Tower of Babel, it seems like people just existed (probably in communities).

• Abraham comes into contact with kings, but it doesn't seem like he is under the rule of any of these kings
• Israel goes into Egypt and becomes subject to the Egyptian government, but God gives Moses information to create a new government for Israel

What Did God Create?

One question to be asked is "what kind of government did God create for Israel?" We can get a pretty good glimpse of that in the Old Testament. The books of law (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) are essentially Israel's constitution...
Exodus 18

• Moses establishes judges to govern Israel
• There were judges over 10s, 100s, and 1000s; culminating in Moses as the highest judge
• This method is similar to the way our court systems work in the US
  • County/City courts
  • State courts
  • The Supreme Court
• There are 3 explicit characterists given for these leaders + 1 implicit characteristic
  1. Fear God
  2. Honest/loves truth
  3. Hates covetousness
  4. Familiar with the ordinances (constitution/laws)

The Lesser of Two Evils?

Israel doesn't stick with the government set up in the wilderness. Eventually they get frustrated with corrupt judges and ask for a king (1 Samuel 8). At this time, God warns the Israelites about the rights of the king they're requesting—these rights parallel some of our governemnt's rights

• Use men for chariots
• Use men for the army (like the draft[1])
• Use women as cooks, bakers, or perfumers
• Take land for himself or his servants (see Eminent Domain)
• Take 1/10 of the harvest (like taxes)
• Take 1/10 of the livestock (like taxes)
• Make the people his servants

And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”1 Samuel 8:18 NKJV

In Israel's mind, this may have been a lesser of two evils situation.

• Saul was appointed king, but went crazy. (1 Samuel 16)
• David was appointed king, and while generally he was a good king, he did send men off to war (use the men for his army), commit adultery (take someone's woman), and subsequently cause him to be killed in battle. (2 Samuel 11)

Church Hurt

Church hurt turns a lot of people away from God when it's actually us that are the problem. In this episode, I want to talk about how "Christians" have turned people away from Christ because we don't follow the words of Christ.

What is the difference between corporate church hurt and personal church hurt?
In this episode I talk about "corporate" and "personal" church hurt. When I say corporate church hurt I'm referring to things that apply to the institution of organized religion. These offsenses may not affect a person personally, but are issues with the religion as a whole. Personal church hurt occurs at a specific church between specific people.

Corporate Church Hurt Examples

• Racism -- Protestant "Christians" behaved outside of the word of God in their practices of slavery and murder of the indigenous population in America.[1]
• Sexism
• Sexual Assault/Pedophila

The issue is that people are claiming to be followers of God, but not living according to His Word and lying about His Word (re: all the images of Biblical figures as white people)

Admitting that you have angered someone is part of the process. Some times you have to pray to be compassionate and let God do the resolving of the situation.

Christian Fantasy: Magic vs. Miracles

I've always been a fan of the fantasy genre, but it seems to always include things that go against God's Word. Then I really confused myself because really, what's the difference between turning your staff into a snake and magic? So today we're diving into the topic of magic vs. miracles.

What is the difference between magic and a miracle?
By modern definition, the difference is that a miracle is improbable, but not impossible. Magic is usually something that is impossible (or an illusion).

There are lots of things that we could be worried about right now, and with good reason. However, now is the time to focus on the good, focus on our relationship with God, and not cling to the world.

• φαρμακεύς (pharmakeus) is often translated to sorcery and basically means drugs (this is where we get the word pharmacy)
• communication with the dead oversteps Christ's earned victory over death

Every miracle is attributed God

• nothing is done of a human's own doing
• prayer and fasting are usually involved

So, what's the difference?

• From the beginning God established a boundary concerning knowledge
• This type of knowledge is taking matters in to your own hand attempting to do things without God
• Satan tempted mankind to take of the fruit from the tree of knowledge to "be like God"
• Receiving vision from God (e.g., Joseph) is different than relying on a crystal ball or a drug induced state
• Healing in the name of God is different than supersitious remedies (or "potions")

• The US almost ended up in a war with Iran over the death of General Qasem Soleimani[1]
• The entire world shut down over COVID-19

• It is election season in multiple countries (U.S., Venezula, and New Zeland)

That's only a partial list, and it's overwhelming!

We live in a time where we could actually implement a "mark" that controls buying and selling (previous generations did not have world wide access and cooperation).

It is important that we don't let fear make decisions for us! When people are afraid, we make decisions we ordinarily wouldn't. Our decisions should come from a rational (and Spiritual) place, even in times of uncertainty.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 NASB

There are lots of things that we could be worried about right now, and with good reason. However, now is the time to focus on the good, focus on our relationship with God, and not cling to the world.

How I Keep the Sabbath

Last we talked about "why" I keep the Sabbath but most of the questions I receive deal with "how" I keep the Sabbath. This week I want to talk about the beauty of the Sabbath. Yes there are things I don't do, but the Sabbath isn't about do's and don'ts, its about worship and the original state of peace the LORD created for mankind.

¹³“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, ¹⁴Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13-14 NKJV

Verses about what not to do on the Sabbath:

• Exodus 16:22-23: Collect food

Important things to think about:

• Contex (for instance, the amount of work it took somone in Biblical times to kindle a fire vs. the work needed today)
• Overall goal/purpose for the day
• Exodus 12:16 and Deuteronomy 16:1-8 show food preparation on the day of Passover considered to be a Sabbath

What did Jesus amend?
Jesus set the Pharisees straight about the purpose of the Sabbath. While there are things God told us not to do, Jesus reminds us that there is a larger picture. As long as our actions align with this larger picture we are in accordance to God's will. It is always acceptable to do good, to do things that bring glory to God even if it may consitute work (example: the preists did work to carry out sacrifices on Sabbath). Here are some examples:

• Perhaps the most quoted example is that from Matthew 12, in which Jesus and the disciples are picking grain to eat on the Sabbath
• Jesus heals on the Sabbath. (Mark 3:1-4)
• Jesus speaks of freeing people on the Sabbath. (Luke 13)

There are things outside of our control. Jesus said if your sheep fell in a ditch, you'd lift it out. Similarly, if your house catches on fire you'd put it out. If someone is sick, they need medical attention. If someone is starving they require food. In the same vein, if you are the firefighter or the doctor, you should rush to help those in need! It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”Matthew 12:12 NKJV

My philosophy concerning Sabbath is to treat it as though God is spending the day with me; He is the guest of honor. How would I treat Him? Would I spend the whole day ignoring Him or doing things that He would not take part in? This also reminds me to focus on planning/time managment. If I know someone is going to visit me, I wouldn't wait untli they get there to clean up, I'd do it before hand. My general rule-of-thumb is if I can plan it, I should get it done beforehand to free up my time with God. If I can't plan it, it's out of my control and the I rely on discernment.

My personal don'ts and why (as you'll see, these are not rooted in scripture but in my personal conviction for myself).

• Play video games: I don't think about God or God's creation when I play video games. For me this falls under "doing my own pleasure" so I save gaming for other days of the week
• Secular media: TV shows, movies, music, etc. that is not meant to glorify God or edifying me so that I can better glorify God is something I save for non-Sabbath hours. I do still consume certain media, such as nature, health, historical, and environmental documentaries that can help me take care of God's creation (Earth and myself) or learn more about the history of God's people. For me its about the day being different and set apart that keeps me from watching even wholesome TV. Also, if God literally came to visit I probably wouldn't spend that time watching movies.
• Attend social functions: this one is nuanced—I still attend potlucks and gatherings at friends homes but usually only certain friends. I usually don't spend Sabbath with my friends who are going to be interested in conversations, activities, etc. that I don't feel are Sabbath appropriate. (Remember what I said about it being lawful to do good? If one of these friends needed me for moral support, I would go to them on Sabbath. When I say "secular functions" I'm referencing things like birthday parties.)
• Attend other secular/social functions: An example would be sporting events. Most of these events require people to work, which I think is a scriptural no-no,but I also find the focus to be questionable and feel that I would be doing my own pleasure.
• Travel long-distance: Flying or driving a long distance during Sabbath usually conflicts with buying (purchasing gas, for example) or requiring people to work for me (e.g., the pilot, flight crew, etc.) I more likely to drive a distance that to fly (at least I can find self-serve gas stations). Again, in an emergency, I would get to someone in need.
• Certain chores: Some people find cleaning theraputic—I find a clean home theraputic, but the process of getting there is work to me. I hate washing dishes, for example, so I usually leave my dishes until after Sabbath. However, if I visit a friend and use their dishes, I would clean after myself because I feel like that is what Christ would do.

Great things to Do on Sabbath:
This is just a list (and not and exhaustive one at that) of options or typical things people do on Sabbath, not a "you should do this" type of list. None of these are required.

• Attend Church
• Spend time with family/friends
• Participate in a ministry
• Bible Study
• Openning/Closing the Sabbath[2]
• Spend time in nature
• Visit the sick
• Visit the elderly
• Visit those who may be downtrodden, feel alone/mistreated, from marginalized groups who need reassurance that they are loved, etc.
• Community service
• Learn about God's creation

Why Do I Keep the Sabbath?

⁸“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
⁹Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
¹⁰but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
¹¹For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11 NKJV

Unlike the other 10 commandments, the Sabbath was instituted at creation (Genesis 2:2-3).

When God commands the Israelites to keep the Sabbath, He says "remember"—it is the only commandment that He prefaces this way.

Many assert that the commandments are done away with, but there are several places in the New Testatment where Christ says "if you love Me, keep My commandments" and even in Revelation, it talks about the people of God keeping the commandments. What commandments do you think they keeping? (Note: when Christ said love God and love your neighbor, the first 4 commandments concern our love for God and the last 6 commandments concern our love for our neighbor; He simply summarized the whole of the law.)
Christ and the Sabbath
Speaking of Christ and the Sabbath, let's look at what Christ actually said about the Sabbath.

• Perhaps the most quoted example is that from Matthew 12, in which Jesus and the disciples are picking grain to eat on the Sabbath
• In Matthew 24:20, Christ tells the people to pray that the hour of destruction does not come upon them on the Sabbath
• Christ stays in the grave during the Sabbath; it is only after Sabbath that He is risen. (Matthew 28:1-7)
• Jesus heals on the Sabbath. (Mark 3:1-4)
• His custom was to teach the word in the synaguoge on Sabbath. (Luke 4:16)
• Jesus speaks of freeing people on the Sabbath. (Luke 13)

Context is important when looking at these verses. The Pharisees were legalistic; they believed they could be saved by keeping the law and had created laws on top of the laws to keep from breaking the original law. In Romans 7:6, Paul talks about the letter of the law verses the spirit of the law and in other places he talks about us being in the Spirit, not under the law. Remember the Spirit is the Holy Spirit, part of the Godhead that wrote the law. Christ Himself said that He came to fulfill the law, not abolish it (Matthew 5:18; 24:34). Paul is not saying "do what thou wilt" (that is a satanist motto), Paul is saying the Spirit will guide you. The Jews had laws about how far one could walk on the Sabbath and wether you could pick something up or not. It had become a burden of "don't"s. When you follow the Jesus in the gospels, you will see that He had a custom of keeping the Sabbath, it just didn't look like what the Pharisees defined. What did Christ do on the Sabbath that the Jews objected to? He healed (did good), He freed (loosed from the bonds of sin), He ate straight from God's creation. Christ was reminding them not to get so caught up in the letter of the law that they miss the whole point.

Daniel 7:25 speaks of an antichrist who thinks to change times and law. The Sabbath is the only commandment given that is both a time (Sabbath) and a law (keep it holy). Ironically 1 Timothy 4:1-3 talks about "doctrines of devils" that include forbidding to marry and abstaining from meats. Keeping the Sabbath was abolished and replaced with Sunday worship by the Catholic church.[1] The Catholic church also forbids their preists to marry[2] (despite the fact that the Bible says in 1 Timothy 3:2 that a bishop/pastor is a man with one wife), and during lent (which is not observed in the Bible), they forbid their members to eat meat on Friday.[3]

⁶Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth— to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— ⁷saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” ⁸And another angel followed, saying, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” ⁹Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, ¹⁰he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. ¹¹And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” ¹²Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. ¹³Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.” Revelation 14:6-13

The first angel in Revelation 14:6-7 proclaims a message about giving glory and worshiping God, "who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water." Notice the following:

• In Exodus 20:8-11 where the commandment to keep the Sabbath holy is given, God gives us a reason to keep the Sabbath: "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." This language is almost identical to what the angel says in Revelation.
• Those who do not receive the Mark of the Beast—"the patience of the saints"—are keeping the commandments of God
• Those who die in the Lord are given rest (which is the literal translation of the word Sabbath). Christ desires to give His people rest in Matthew 11:28-29 as well. Paul outlines more on rest in Hebrews 4.

The Bible talks about signs, seals, and marks. Two are of particular interest to us: the Seal of God and the Mark of the Beast. First let's define a seal. A seal signifies authority, acts as a signature, and is a mark of an office.[4] If you think about a formal signature or seal, it usually has three parts: a name, title, and territory. For instance, if I were to sign a formal letter or email in my career, I would sign: "Shiree Hughes, Ph.D., Embedded Systems Engineer, <Company I Work For>" Leaders do the same thing today: Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America. The 4th commmandment is the law that contains this information about the Lord: the Lord, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Now, with that information, compare the following passages:

• Exodus 13:9
• Exodus 31:12-18
• Deuteronomy 6:1-8
• Deuteronomy 11:13-18
• Revelation 7:3
• Revelation 9:4
• Revelation 13:16-18
• Revelation 14:1;9
• Revelation 17:5
• Revelation 20:4

The seal of God is following Him and His commandments; the mark of the Beast is following man and the laws man comes up with (this goes well beyond the Sabbath, but the Sabbath is a start).

In Exodus, the reason given for keeping the Sabbath is that God is the creator. In Deuteronomy, the reason given is that He brought the Israelites out of bondage. Both of these reasons show us a full picture of who God is: He is the Creator and He is the Redeemer. The Sabbath is a reminder that He both created us and saved us from bondage. It also points forward (and backward) to God's perfect creation where there exists rest and freedom from bondage.

Why are people against keeping the Sabbath?
God said "I'm going to give you a day where you don't have to do anything. You can take a break, relax, enjoy the planet I gave you, fellowship with your friends, etc." and people are saying "No, I don't have to do that." We'll pick up with this thought in next week's episode on how I keep the Sabbath.
